     Separation from God
I am pretty good person.  And I do many good things for people.  I'm certainly better than the people I read about in the newspaper.  And on the scales of justice, my "good" will, without doubt, outweigh my "bad".  So, when I die, I know I am going to Heaven.  Besides, everyone knows that God is love!  So, He will forgive me for my few indiscretions.
This seems to be a prevalent belief of society, doesn't it?  If there is a god, he will lovingly forgive me for my indiscretions.
Well, no matter how good I think am, I still fall way short of the purity, perfection, and holiness of the Lord God Almighty.  I may think that I am good enough to be with God when I die, but God judges my life, not me.  And God explicitly states that I (an imperfect and sinful person) will never be good enough to earn my way into Heaven.  I cannot work hard enough.  I cannot be good enough.  I cannot do enough good deeds to reach Heaven when I die.
The Bible says, "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God -- not by works, so that no one can boast." [Ephesians 2:8-9]
Only one person in the history of the world was perfect enough in this world to now be with God.  That person is God's Son Jesus.
The Bible declares that Jesus is The Christ or The Messiah* -- the Son of the living God ! ! ! !
The multiple writers (including hundreds of eye-witnesses) of the books that have been compiled into the Bible wrote that Christ Jesus died on a cross.  He suffered a terrible whipping and scourging and then the Roman soldiers drove iron spikes through his hands and the heels of his feet.  He was mocked, humiliated, tortured, and killed through a most cruel, merciless, slow, agonizing, tortuous form of capital punishment.  He died for you!  He died for me!  He died for our sins!  Through His selfless act and through His love for all sinners, He provides the bridge over the "River of Sin", so that we have God's promise (there is none better!) of eternal life with Him in Heaven!  That is something of which you can be assured ! ! ! ! !
PRAISE BE TO GOD!

* The Hebrew word "Messiah" is defined as the "anointed".
Messiah, when translated into Greek, is Christ.

I Peter 5:8b Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. (NIV)

Interesting note: the Islamic Qur'an (Surah 19:16-34) actually references Jesus.
